Hsiao-Chi Chu, The Forgotten Refugee Heritage in Palestine (遊走邊緣的國度:那些被遺忘的流亡行李-巴勒斯坦), Refugee Path, 2023
A friend once described Palestine as being like Taiwan—a place on the margins. After visiting, it felt as though I had only gained a superficial understanding, without truly grasping its deeper realities. This led me to return to Palestine in search of my own understanding of “home” and “identity”…
The book A Country on the Margins: Forgotten Luggage of Exile — Palestine is a collection of ethnographic field notes. It brings together observations made by the author between 2018 and 2023 in Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, documenting lived experiences and real stories encountered along the way. Rather than challenging official histories shaped by nation-states, the work seeks to restore and foreground personal memories and everyday experiences.
Through various mediums—such as food, heritage, and embroidery—the author reflects on the connection between Palestinians and their land, extending the discussion to themes of the individual, the nation, and the idea of home. It further explores the significance of “land connection” in shaping Palestinian identity.
